Captain America: Civil War is the first movie in Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As expected, Civil War lived up to the hype and fans couldn’t be more satisfied. I mean, there is probably a couple things that fans are complaining about but we can’t all be happy. Right? The first two Phases in the MCU both contained six films each but Phase 3 is set to be the biggest one yet as there are still nine more films to go. Captain America: Civil War left a hole in the Avengers team and the Marvel Cinematic Universe and we are going to figure out, to our very best, what lasting effect the film has on the rest of Phase 3. There will be MAJOR SPOILERS ahead!
Before we continue, lets look at the rest of the films in Phase 3:
Doctor Strange (2016)
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Black Panther (2018)
Avengers: Infinity War Part I (2018)
Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)
Captain Marvel (2019)
Avengers: Infinity War Part II (2019)
When you really think about it, Captain America: Civil War did not resolve the issue between Steve Rogers and Tony Stank… Stark, by the end of the film. Not only does Rogers hand over his shield to Stark but also the Avengers team. But when you think about it, there is no Avengers to hand over.
Lets do a quick “Where are they now?” with members of Team Iron Man in Civil War. James Rhodes, aka War Machine, becomes paralyzed due to a blast from Vision and it is unknown if he will be able to fight again. Seeing how Rhodes is best friends with Stark, it is hard to imagine that Stark does not invent some kind of gadget that gets Rhodes back into the War Machine suit but it is also easy to imagine Rhodes retiring the suit from this point on.
Vision will also probably take his own little hiatus from the Avengers due to feeling some sort of remorse for what he did to Rhodes. We all know that the blast was an accident and Vision had no cruel intentions towards Rhodes but Vision still has to live with the consequences of not having his head in the game.
Black Panther and Black Widow both started the film on Team Iron Man but by film’s end they both found themselves on Team Captain America. No word on Widow’s location but with a shaky relationship with Stark, one could count on Widow doing her own thing. Perfect timing for a Black Widow standalone film? As for Black Panther, the first post-credit scene revealed that Steve Rogers and the rest of Team Cap are in fact with the Black Panther in Wakanda. Is he joining Rogers and his team? More on that later.
That leaves just one final member of Team Iron Man, Spider-Man. The web-slinger is the only member of Team Iron Man that ended the movie on good terms with the team’s leader and the duo will be sharing the screen together once more in Spider-Man Homecoming. It seems as if Stark will play a mentor role to a young Peter Parker and he is going to need it with all the other superheroes being MIA.
Captain America: Civil War ends with the members of Team Cap, Falcon, Ant-Man, Hawkeye and Scarlett Witch, imprisoned on the Raft but not before Steve Rogers breaks them out before the credits begin to roll. The first post-credit scene seems to suggest that Team Cap has found a new home in Wakanda but it seems as if not all members will stay with the team as well.
First there is the Winter Soldier who was put back into hibernation in the first post-credit scene and there is a chance that Scarlett Witch will take a hiatus as well. With Scarlett Witch still struggling with her powers, it seems all but logical to have her isolate herself until she has a better grasp of them. This could potential set up a Vision and Scarlett Witch love connection as both characters will be emotionally lost moving forward in Phase 3.
Falcon and Ant-Man are most likely going to be sticking by Captain America’s side but there is a chance that Hawkeye will go back into retirement.
When predicting how Captain America: Civil War will affect the rest of Phase 3, then it is quite easy to eliminate a couple movies off the list that should be unscathed from the events that unfolded: Doctor Strange, due to serving as an origin story for the Sorcerer Supreme, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2, due to taking place in a different galaxy altogether, and Thor: Ragnarok, due to our titled character, Thor, and other missing Avenger, Hulk, being left out of Civil War. Spider-Man: Homecoming will most likely be the only film out of the 2016 and 2017 releases that should be affected and that is only due to Stark and Parker’s relationship. There has been no word on how big of a role Stark will have in the film but with Iron Man being the only hero on Spider-Man’s side at the moment, we are a expecting a mentor hard at work.
The first film in 2018 is no other than Black Panther and the film will be affected greatly by the events that take place in Civil War. With T’Challa turning his back on Iron Man to help Captain America hide the Winter Soldier, Cap warns Wakanda’s king that people will come looking for Bucky. T’Challa replies with the following sentiment, “Let them come.” It appears as it T’Challa is ready to rule Wakanda and won’t be joining any Avengers team anytime soon. The question then turns into how congested will Black Panther be? Will Steve Rogers and his Secret Avengers-esque team be present within the film as the movie will be a direct continuation of the post-credit scene or will Black Panther be given a chance to do his own thing? The answer to this will help shape a better prediction for Avengers: Infinity War Part I.
As of now, it is easy to see multiple Avengers teams formed for the third and fourth installment of the Avengers franchise as we will have Captain America’s rogue team and Iron Man’s government-official team. Heck, we might even see The Defenders make a cameo in Infinity War as well.
There are going to be three characters that play a major role in Infinity War and that will be Scarlett Witch, Thor, and the Hulk. Until the events of Thor: Ragnarok are revealed then it hard to know the status of our two missing Avengers. It made sense to keep them out of Civil War but these two god-like heroes will be very present in Infinity War. There is one thing we know for sure that will happen in either Infinity War film and that is Thanos will be possession of all of the Infinity Stones. You might of overlooked it but Civil War revealed something very important about Scarlett Witch’s powers. During her quick battle with Vision, in which she was victorious, Scarlett Witch revealed to us that her powers are strong enough to over power an Infinity Stone. This same strength is going to be needed to defeat Thanos and his collection of Infinity Stones.
